PART 2 : IN-PERSON INTENSIVE

The second part of training is held in Vancouver, Canada, at Stretch Studio from June 9 to 21 2025.

Training hours are Monday to Saturday 8am-5:30pm, Sundays off.

In-person intensive is led by lead teacher trainer Vanessa Bourget, and local guest teachers (tba).

In this training, you will study two distinct yoga systems that have shaped and influenced the most prominent types of modern yoga. While these certainly overlap in some principles and applications, they differ in their origins and their specific practices, goals, and methodology.

Styles of yoga that have evolved from these two systems and yoga areas of India have various names you may know of, depending on school and teacher, but here, we will refer to them as Ghosh Yoga and Vinyasa Yoga.

GHOSH YOGA

Ghosh Yoga is a set of values and traditions passed down from Bishnu Charan Ghosh. It shares a lot of history and values with other yoga systems, since most yoga traces its roots back to early texts and philosophies.

Generally speaking, the goals of Ghosh Yoga begin with health in the body and stillness in the mind. It is characterized by its use of stillness during and immediately following yoga postures. This system of tension and release emphasizes relaxation between periods of effort. (This is different from many modern styles of yoga that incorporate Sun Salutes between postures and link postures together.)

Ghosh Yoga uses simple therapeutic exercises to mobilize and strengthen every area of the body, from the eyes down to the toes, including the internal organs and systems. In this way, it resembles physical therapy. It uses postures (asanas) to bring grace and control to the body and stillness to the mind. It uses breathing exercises (pranayama) and meditation to reduce stress and anxiety and begin on the path of spirituality.

VINYASA YOGA

Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic style of yoga that emphasizes the fluid movement between postures, coordinating breath with each transition. This approach allows practitioners to build strength, flexibility, and endurance while fostering a meditative state through the continuous flow of movements.

The roots of Vinyasa Yoga can be traced back to the early 20th century in southern India, particularly at the Mysore Palace, where T. Krishnamacharya played a pivotal role in its development. Krishnamacharya is often regarded as the father of modern yoga, and he taught a style of yoga that integrated asana (posture), usually linked with Sun Salutations, pranayama (breath control), and meditation.

Krishnamacharya trained many students, including notable figures such as Pattabhi Jois (who developed Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga), B.K.S. Iyengar (known for his emphasis on alignment and the use of props), and T.K.V. Desikachar (he focused on individualized practices and therapeutic applications of yoga).

GHOSH YOGA

  • Developed in northern India (Bengal) by Bishnu Ghosh.

  • Emphasizes a structured sequence of postures, often integrating therapeutic principles, and focusing on tension and release, effort and relaxation..

  • Has gained popularity, especially in the context of hot yoga, and various fitness-oriented practices, with a focus on therapeutic applications.

VINYASA YOGA

  • Originated in southern India, particularly at the Mysore Palace under Krishnamacharya's teachings.

  • Focuses on the flow between postures and the synchronization of breath with movement. It often includes creative sequencing and Sun Salutations.

  • Has evolved into various forms, including Ashtanga, Power, and Flow Yoga.
